World Manufacturer Identifier
Identifies the manufacturer's country, maker, and division
- 1st digit: Geographic region (1-5: North America, 6-7: Oceania, 8-9: South America, etc.)
- 2nd digit: Country within region (1: USA, 2: Canada, 3: Mexico, etc.)
- 3rd digit: Manufacturer specific code
Vehicle Descriptor Section
Describes vehicle attributes like model, body style, engine type
- Positions 4-8: Vehicle features (varies by manufacturer)
- Position 9: Check digit - mathematically calculated value used for validation
Vehicle Identifier Section
Includes model year, plant code, and production sequence number
- Position 10: Model yearA=2010, B=2011, C=2012... (excludes I, O, Q, U, Z)
- Position 11: Assembly plant (assigned by manufacturer)
- Positions 12-17: Sequential production number
